When the Music Stops

Ezekiel 26:13
“And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.”

Music plays an important part in everyone’s life. Music shows the direction a person is going. Music calms the heart in unsettled times. Music is an expression of what is going on in a person’s life. A person should never underestimate the power of music.

There is a song that says, “I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free.” These words are very true. However, what happens when the music stops? In the verse above, you see that God caused “the noise of thy songs to cease.” A place that used to be filled with music would now be filled with silence. What is it that caused the music to stop?

You will find that Tyrus had no more music because their walls were torn down. The outlook tower was destroyed. The people were taken captive. The walls had become rubbish. Death had visited their families. This is why the music stopped. Heartache and captivity had visited their life, and they had no reason to sing.

Has the music stopped in your life? Has sin torn down the walls of Christianity? Are you now facing the consequences of sin, and there seems to be no reason to sing? Yes, the music does stop when sin destroys lives. The music will stop when the Devil has had his way in someone’s life.

However, there are some who have lost their song because of heartache. Yes, the walls of financial security have been torn down, and you see no way out of your problems. Death has visited you, and you think there is no reason to sing again. Sickness has gripped your body and torn down the walls of health. You feel like the people in Psalm 137:4 who said, “How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?”

Friend, let me encourage you that even if the walls are rubbish in your life, there is still a reason to sing. That reason is that you are saved and on your way to Heaven. Life may have taken your security away, and left nothing but chaos and loneliness, but you still have a reason to sing, and the reason is your salvation. When you read the Scriptures, you see that walls have been rebuilt that were once torn down. You can see that death is just a temporary sting for those who are saved.

Let me encourage you not to let circumstances take your song. When the music stops, it is a sign of defeat. Don’t let the enemy know that they have defeated you. Moreover, if you are going through tough times, music is what will encourage your soul. If you listen to the right music, you will find it can lift your spirit out of your doldrums. I encourage you to continue singing. Don’t let it be said about you that the music stopped. Let people say about you that no matter what you face, the music goes on.

How Would Jesus Respond to the Navy Yard Shooting

How-Would-Jesus-Respondby: Jason Williams

Recently, America suffered yet another tragedy at the hands of a gunman in the Navy Yard Massacre. It seemed like the bullets had barely hit the ground when shots were being fired on all sides of the gun control argument and all those who were determined to make a dollar off of death. On one side you had those who responded by trying to use death to prove a point. Our president and his liberal media seemed especially  determined to respond by pointing out the fact that it was guns that were the real issue.  They almost seemed to forget the fact that people were hurting in their attempt at this.  One news station went so far as to say that the weapon used was a Ar-15 shotgun, even though no such weapon exists! The other conservative side to seemed just as desperate to point out that it was not the guns at fault, and if everyone carried a gun it would never happen, still others talked about medicine and PTSD and many other topics, but lost in the whole mess was the fact that people, real people, were hurting.

Romans 12:15 tells us to weep with those who weep, and I am afraid that in our efforts to protect or limit our freedoms, America and all her Christians have forgot that we are not to respond in selfishness but in love. You see, sometimes we forget that it is just as important to do right as it is to be right, and because we know that the liberals will turn bloodshed into a dollar and an agenda, we feel that we need to shout the truth just as loudly as they shout lies. But the truth is Jesus Christ loves all sinners and is moved by their sorrows, and He alone, not a law, not a speech, not a article can change a world.

So today, let’s put down our fists and reach out hands like He did to those who have broken hearts, let’s dry their tears while we weep and lift up those who cannot lift themselves up, comfort those who cannot be comforted and let’s respond by weeping with those who weep. This is how Jesus would respond.

Destructive Actions

Ezekiel 16:49
“Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.”

Sodom will always go down in history for their destruction. We often think that God destroyed Sodom for the sin of sodomy, but you can find there were other destructive actions they committed that caused God to destroy the whole city.

The destructive actions that Sodom committed will also destroy a person if they do the same. Always remember that the sins of Sodom were committed by individuals. The reason God destroyed the whole city was because the whole city got caught up in these actions. Yet, the same actions will destroy individuals. Let me show you these destructive actions that will destroy you.

The first destructive action is having a destructive spirit. Pride is a destructive spirit. Pride is the attitude that a person is better than others. This will destroy any person or organization. Always remember that you are no better than anyone else, but you are also no worse than anyone else. Pride is always the core of sin. If you will keep your pride in check, then you will keep most sin away.

The second destructive action is having destructive desires. “Fulness of bread” was one of the sins that destroyed Sodom. This is the attitude that what you have is never enough, you always have to have more, what we have is never good enough, or enough is never enough. Friend, be content with what you have, and tell yourself that you don’t always need more.

The third destructive action is having destructive priorities. Sodom was filled with an “abundance of idleness.” They had their priorities wrong in that they wanted to play before they worked. They wanted everything without having to work. This action will destroy your life. You must always keep in mind that work comes before play. Work is not a bad thing. Work is godly.

The fourth destructive action is having a destructive behavior. Sodom was “haughty,” which simply means they had the attitude that they could do anything they wanted because nothing could take them down. They were so arrogant they felt they could do anything they wanted and get away with it. Always be careful about having a false sense of security that you can do whatever you want and never have to worry about the consequences. Haughtiness will give you a false sense of security in yourself and your abilities, which will eventually destroy you. You can’t do whatever you want and get away with it.

The last destructive action is having destructive lusts. Of course, Sodom was filled with vile affections. This is the last stage a person reaches before their destruction. You must keep your lusts under control. Your flesh will drive you to do ungodly things, and they may please you for a short period, but their consequences will come.

Friend, whatever you do, don’t allow these destructive actions in your life. Right now, ask the Holy Spirit to show you if you have any of these actions in your life. Be honest with yourself and listen to His voice. If there is a hint of any of these actions in your life, then quickly deal with them and get rid of them. These actions destroyed Sodom, and any one of these actions will destroy you.

Overcoming Your Surroundings

Ezekiel 2:8
“But thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious like that rebellious house: open thy mouth, and eat that I give thee.”

Everybody has surroundings they must overcome. We often think that those who grow up in a bad neighborhood are the only one’s who must overcome their surroundings, but this isn’t true. There are many instances when you must overcome your surroundings and do right. For instance, there are many who must overcome the surroundings at their workplace. There are some who must overcome the surroundings in their own home. There are some who must overcome the surroundings of their family and do right. There are many places that we must overcome our surroundings everyday and do right.

God made it very clear that Ezekiel would have to overcome his surroundings if he was going to do right. It says about Ezekiel in the verse above, “Be not thou rebellious like that rebellious house:…” Ezekiel lived in a rebellious atmosphere. Every person around him had rebelled against God. God was very clear that He didn’t want Ezekiel to let his surroundings affect his obedience to Him. Undoubtedly, he did overcome his surroundings and became a great prophet of God. I find there are some things that Ezekiel did that helped him to overcome his surroundings.

First, Ezekiel had to listen to his positive influences. It says in the verse above, “…hear what I say unto thee;…” Of course, God was the positive influence in his life, and he listened. If you are saved, then you must listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit as He tries to influence you. God is the most positive influence in your life. When He tells you to do something, then you must obey His guiding hand. In bad surroundings, the guiding voice of the Holy Spirit will show you what to do if you will listen.

Second, Ezekiel had to be determined to do right. In verses 4-8, you find that God warned him that those whom he was about to speak to would be stubborn and would not listen. In other words, God was telling Ezekiel he was going to have to be determined to do right, because he would not see change in his surroundings. If you’re going to overcome your surroundings, then you must be determined you are going to do right. You may never change your surroundings, so you must be determined to do right in spite of what others around you do.

Third, verse 10 shows that Ezekiel had to let the Word of God influence his thinking. You will never overcome your surroundings if you don’t spend time in the Scriptures. Much time in the Scriptures will influence your thinking process, which will help you to overcome bad surroundings.

Fourth, Ezekiel had to be willing to do the unpopular thing. In the next few chapters, Ezekiel was commanded to do some very unpopular things, which he did. Friend, you can’t expect to overcome your surroundings and be accepted by everyone. When your surrounding are bad, then you will be unpopular when you try to do right. You must be willing to do that which is unpopular, and that which may cause others to be upset with you if you are going to overcome your surroundings.

Everyday you are going to be in places that try to influence you for wrong. Are you going to let them influence you to do wrong, or are you going to be the one who goes against the flow and come out of your surroundings doing right? It doesn’t matter how bad your surroundings may be, if you will do these four things you can overcome any circumstance you face.

Your Influence in Action

Your-Influence-in-Actionby: Denise Long

I recall sitting at the lunch table with my three young sons one day. They were talking about growing up to be men. My four-year-old son looked at me with all seriousness and desire to please me and asked, “Mommy, what do you want me to be when I grow up?” As a smile ran across my face, I knew just what my answer would be. You see, I had been praying about that since before his birth. I said, “A GREAT MAN OF GOD.”

With eyes wide as saucers, and a look of amazement and surprise he replied, “You mean I can be a great man of God?”.

“Oh yes, you can be whatever you want to be, but, mommy, daddy and God want you to be a servant for Him.”

“Ok mommy, I will do what God wants and I’ll do it great!”

His desire to please God in a great way is still evident to this day. Titus and I never even talked about that conversation again until his high school graduation when he reminded me that he planned to serve God in a great way all of his life.

As you read this little story, think about it. I did not call him to preach, to the ministry or tell him how to serve God, only that it was great to serve God. Of course, we all know God does not need me or you as a mom to give our permission to Him before He calls our sons into His service. However, young children want to please mom more than anything. Some parents pick out a sport to push their children towards, or even an Ivy League college for them to attend. Some parents shove their sons into a prestigious career. I was not, and have not done that. I let him know that serving God is a great thing. Just saying something does not do it. You know as well as I do, if I had said, “God wants you to be a servant for Him,” but was never involved in serving God myself things would be different today.

We all know that a conversation with our husband’s like this will never work. The Bible tells us as wives to win our husband over with our conversation in 1 Peter 3:1. Yes, this is primarily talking about salvation, but I believe it can also be applied to service. I believe the conversation that the Bible is speaking of is our actions. Are you active in the church? Are you willing to be a sacrifice for the cause of Christ? Romans 12:1-2 beseeches us to be a living sacrifice. This may be a little hard for some of us to digest, so take it slow. Ask yourself, how willing am I to serve God, and does my husband know?

Are you willing to give up that new furniture you have been dreaming of because the church bus needs new tires? OUCH!!! Or, maybe the church needs a van to transport people to and from church. Are you willing to suggest to your husband to donate the money you’ve been setting aside for a couple years for that new flooring in your home in exchange for a new church van? ARE YOU STILL WITH ME? What would that be telling your husband about your seriousness to serve God? You know as well as I do that our husband wants to make us happy. Sadly, men are all too often willing to ignore God’s call on their lives. WHY? WHY?…‘To take care of us.’ We remind him of that vow they took at the marriage alter, “You promised to provide for me.”

DON’T BE SO SELFISH. People are going to Hell while we have a pair of shoes and matching purse for each outfit! HERE IS ANOTHER ONE. Just how much do you spend on manicures and pedicures, $100 per month, more? What would it tell your husband if you started painting you own nails and giving that money to missionaries? I’m not suggesting for us ladies to be unkept. I’m admonishing us to be living sacrifices. In doing so, our husbands will get the message loud and clear that we are serious about the service of God.

Are you willing to use your Saturdays to serve in nursing homes, visit shut-ins, or work a bus route with your family? WOW! Who gave you those Saturdays? Do we give a tithe of our time? God gave us 168 hours a week. How many hours do you tithe? 10%? Less? I’m not even suggesting that you use all day.

GET READY FOR THIS ONE! Here is an idea that may be life changing. Are you willing to give up that relaxing vacation you’ve been planning in exchange for a hot, sweaty, uncomfortable mission trip? Don’t just send hubby, you go too. I did. On it God confirmed in mine and my husband’s hearts that He wants us to serve Him full-time on the mission field. You may not have the same results, but I’M GIVING FAIR WARNING.

You may be thinking that you’ve not ever heard this from the pulpit; true. YOU’RE RIGHT AND WE KNOW WHY TOO. Preachers would never be successful saying this to us women. Just think what we would say or think about him. What would that do to the potluck fellowship he has planned? It would probably turn into a “you’re out-of-luck, we ain’t doing nothing, fasting fellowship” using the word ‘fellowship’ loosely of course. This is something us ladies of God must say to one another. The Bible tells us to teach the younger women. I don’t think that it would hurt to remind all ladies of this.

I challenge you be a living sacrifice. Go ahead, God wins and we feel used and needed. Perhaps our men will be more willing to serve God once they know how much we are.

I’ve Heard a Rumor

Jeremiah 49:14
“I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.”

It is amazing how interested a person will get when they hear a rumor. God understood the interest that rumors bring, so he sent a rumor to Jeremiah to spread to the people. Of course, this was more than a rumor, this was what God was going to do to the Ammonites. Yet, God wanted their attention so badly that He told Jeremiah to tell them he heard a rumor.

If a person really wanted to, they could wrap their life up in rumors, but their life would be filled with fiction. I have been around Christianity my whole life, and I’ve learned that rumors are plenteous. With the technological advances of the internet, you can learn all of the rumors by going to the forums and social networking sites. Let me give you some thoughts about what to do when you hear a rumor, and then what to do when someone spreads a rumor about you.

First, don’t go looking for rumors. Remember Philippians 4:8 when it says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Most rumors will not cause you to think this way. One of the biggest reasons we want to know rumors is so we can get some dirt on someone we don’t like. This is evil at its core. Don’t allow yourself to get involved in rumor mongering.

Second, don’t believe a rumor when you hear it. Remember, it’s a rumor, which means you don’t know if it is true or not. Just because someone you know tells you it is true doesn’t make it true. Whenever you hear a rumor, your first instinct should be to pass if off as untrue.

Third, don’t spread the rumor. If you’re not supposed to think about things that are not honest or of good report, then that would certainly mean you should not spread them. God calls that talebearing. When you spread a rumor, you are hurting someone’s name without any proof to back up what you’re saying.

Unfortunately, there are going to be times when you are going to have to deal with someone spreading a rumor about you. When you hear someone started a rumor about you, don’t worry. One of the intents of rumors is to get you to respond. You need to be careful that you don’t let it bother you. Always remember that most rumors are short-lived.

Second, go to the source of the rumor. When you hear someone has said something about you, then the best course of action is to go to them directly to discuss their action. Don’t go with a combative attitude. You will find that most of the time when you approach someone about a rumor, it will catch them off guard and will cause them to back off from saying something like that about you again.

Finally, ask God for help in dealing with the rumor. Of course, this should be your first course of action. God is the only One Who can deal with those who have the intent to hurt you. Don’t try to get revenge by lowering yourself to spread rumors about them; instead, pray for them and ask God to stop the rumors.

Whether you are the recipient of rumors or the subject of the rumor, you need to be careful how you deal with them. Most rumors at heart have a way of destroying someone’s name. If you spread a rumor that has no validity, then you will be the one who looks bad. If you’re the one who is the subject of the rumor, God and your character will defend you. Be careful that you handle rumors in the right way.

Give Right a Chance

Jeremiah 44:18
“But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.”

One of the mistakes many Christians make is that they expect the reward for doing right to come quickly. This is the mistake the Israelites made while they were captives in Egypt. They stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven, and they expected God to immediately bless them. They felt if they did right, God would immediately return them to their homeland. What they forgot was that the consequences for their sin had already gone into affect. Just because they started doing right didn’t mean that the consequence of sin would no longer affect them. Because they didn’t get immediate rewards for doing right, they decided to go back to their sinful lifestyle to their own detriment.

We must always remember that there are consequences and rewards for doing right and wrong. Neither the consequence of sin or the reward of doing right come quickly. When you study life, you find that consequences and rewards take time to have an affect. You must be careful to give right a chance to pay. Just because you don’t see immediate rewards for doing right doesn’t mean that it doesn’t pay to do right. You simply have to give your right actions a chance to go through their cycle to rewards. Let me give you some thoughts on how to give right a chance.

First, don’t do right for the sake of rewards. This is where many people become frustrated with doing right. Many people already have an idea of what they think their reward should be for doing right. This only sets you up for disillusionment. What you feel you should be rewarded and what God gives as a reward may be two different things. If you do right for the sake of rewards, you will stop doing right when you don’t get the rewards in your expected time frame. Doing right for the sake of rewards will only cause you to be disappointed with God.

Second, do right for the sake of doing right. If you do right because it’s right, then you will never be disappointed with doing right. Doing right without an expectation of rewards will only cause the rewards for doing right to be that much better. You must decide that you are going to do right because it is the right thing to do.

Third, give right a chance to bring its rewards. Always keep in mind that everything has a season. The consequences of sin didn’t happen immediately, and the rewards for doing right won’t immediately come either. They both have a season they must go through before they actually happen. If you will do right for the sake of doing right, then your patience for doing right won’t be an issue.

Friend, let me remind you that doing right always gives good rewards. Just because everything doesn’t seem to be paying off the way you expected doesn’t mean that your good is for nothing. Don’t give up on doing right and go back to a sinful lifestyle, for that will only bring the adverse circumstances back. I don’t know how long you need to give right chance, but if you will wait on the LORD, you will be pleased with the rewards that doing right brings.

What About the Lost Books

What-About-the-Lost-Booksby: Steve Shutt

While this topic is a bit tedious, I ask that you take some time to consider it and its ramifications. If in any way, the texts that make up our Bible are in error, then there will be a serious stall in the Christian faith. To that end, I have endeavored to deal with this topic as simply as possible – while at the same time being honest in both my research and delivery. I want you, the reader, to have a fairly good understanding of this issue, so that when (this is no longer an “if” scenario) you are asked about this issue, you have a good basis from which to work.

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”  (Galatians 1:8)

As I began work on this article, this passage in Galatians chapter 1 kept coming to my mind. In this passage, Paul is fairly clear about what he thinks of people who preach another gospel. He was especially hard on those who knowingly preached a different gospel, with the sole intent of destroying the authority, person, and work of Jesus Christ. Sadly, the only difference between Paul’s Galatian Epistle and us concerning this problem is time; nothing else has really changed…it has merely taken a different name brand. In this article, it is my intention to show the significance of true Christian faith, as well as the absolute necessity of a true and valid text that both describes and defends that faith.

There are no less than 44 books that fall into the category of “Major Christian Apocryphal Books.” Of those, 6 are classified as “Gospels” and contain materials specific to the life and teachings of Christ. Among some scholars, these books hold a special appeal because “orthodox Christianity” has generally ignored and/or condemned these books. These scholars often are inclined, not to give a legitimate thesis for their conclusions, but rather seek to interpret their own views upon the Bible and upon Christianity as a whole. They fail to see that these books were not condemned because the authors were hated, but rather because the content was so radically different from accepted Christian faith that they threatened its very foundation, and often blatantly challenged basic Christian truths. Let us deal with a few of these texts (as well as the people who both penned and promoted them), and see the massive differences they bring within Christianity as a whole.

The first thing that needs to be discussed is the fracture that existed in Christianity during the times of the Apostles. Christianity, being a young faith at the time, had its share of trials and tribulations. The physical problems that Christianity faced were merely a part of the whole; the theological problems were really beginning to hurt the church from within. The Apostles were keenly aware of the problems, and addressed them quickly and specifically. One of the main threats that the Apostles saw within Christianity, and one that was rapidly growing was, “Gnosticism.”

Gnosticism took its namesake from their very belief system: “The learned ones” (γνῶσις and Οι Γνωστικοί in Greek). They believed that salvation could only come from learning the “deep things” that were hinted at in Scripture, and that one could not truly understand Scripture unless they were educated by a Gnostic in one of their schools/churches, and told what exactly to look for when reading Scripture. Obviously, the Gnostics did not deny everything that the Apostles taught. For example, the Gnostics did believe that Jesus was God (at least in part), but He did not take on a physical body because that would have corrupted his Divine attributes. Thus, some of the Gnostics went so far as to say that Christ did not actually die, but was merely acting like He was dead. This view became known as “Docetism,” which means “illusion.” Norbert Brox narrowly defines it as, “the doctrine according to which the phenomenon of Christ, his historical and bodily existence, and thus above all the human form of Jesus, was altogether mere semblance without any true reality.” In other words, these people believed that Jesus’ human attributes were merely an illusion to obtain a following.

This flies in the fact of what John said in 1 John 1:1-3,

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

It is within this passage that John clearly states that the Jesus he saw was no mere “apparition” or “phantom,” but was literally and physically present. We know that Thomas touched Jesus’ physical body. So it would seem, based on John’s own testimony, that he touched Jesus’ physical body as well; that means that the Gnostic view that Jesus’ body was merely an “apparition” or an illusion is false.

Let us deal with one of the more famous “Lost Gospels” of the Gnostics: the Gospel of Thomas. Penned around the middle of the 2nd century AD, the text was fairly well known and used, until Athanasius gave a list of accepted Christian writings, as well as a list of heretical writings, in 387 AD. The Gospel of Thomas fell into the latter category, and most of the texts were destroyed and never again produced. On copy of the Gospel of Thomas, along with 52 other texts (most were Gnostic, though some were not) was hidden in Oxyrhynchus, Egypt, where it was to be found nearly 1,500 years later.

The opening statement in the Gospel of Thomas is the following, “These are the secret words which the living Jesus spoke, and Didymus Judas Thomas wrote them down. 1 And he said: He who shall find the interpretation of the words shall not taste of death.” At this point, it is obvious that it is a Gnostic text, because the Gnostics believed that salvation came through knowledge, rather than through grace and faith in Christ.  Again we see a massive challenge to what the Bible clearly says in Titus 3:5-7:

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

In the text itself, it says that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were “extremely close” and had a close relationship. While it does not specifically state how close, or what type of closeness it was, it does state that Jesus was known to kiss Mary. Here is the problem: the part where it says Jesus kissed her has been partially eaten away by ants, leaving only the phrase, “Jesus often kissed Mary on.” While this flies in the face of all biblical evidence, the people who translated the text thought it best to add in what they believed the text was going to say. So, they translated it to say that Jesus often kissed Mary “on the mouth.” Why would someone do that? Simple: they saw what they wanted to see, rather than what was actually there.

In conclusion: Why do people read these “Lost Books of Christianity?” The answer, as sad as it appears, is actually very simple: they are not content with reading only the Bible. They want to have “something more” than just an old book. They want to know the character of Christ from what someone else says about him, rather than going directly to Him for confirmation. They would rather believe what someone says about the Bible, than read it for themselves. They are not content to rely on God’s grace for their salvation; they would rather try to earn it themselves by their own merits and studies. While I am certainly for studying, studying can only bring you so far. If you’re not careful, it can lead you into heresy – especially if you’re studying all the wrong things. The Gnostics were looking to their own minds to solve problems that only God could solve. When they couldn’t solve those problems themselves, they tried to change the character of God to make up for their failed efforts.

Christian, stop looking to yourself to solve spiritual things. Look to Christ, and to Christ alone. Only Christ can solve the problems that you need answered. He is enough to trust for salvation, and He is more than enough to trust now that we are saved. Remember, our own “works of righteousness” got us into the mess we were in when He saved us. Trust his Word – as It is – and you will see that It is all you need.

Surrendering to the Captor

Jeremiah 21:9
“He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.”

Jeremiah’s prophecy to Zedekiah was a strange sermon. He told them to either surrender to the Chaldeans who would take them captive or die. This didn’t seem like much of a choice. Death, or place yourself under the oppression of captivity and live; yet, if they lived they still had life. They still had opportunities to influence others. They still had family they could enjoy. No, they would never go back to their homeland, but they would live and be able to serve the LORD.

At some point in your life, you will have to face the choice that Judah had to face. I’m not talking about your country being taken captive, but I’m talking about your life being taken captive. I’m talking about your life being seized by heartache, sorrow, disease, loneliness, etc. This captivity has nothing to do with a life of sin, it all has to do with God’s will for your life. When the captors come, you have a choice to either surrender to them or let whatever has captivated your life cause you to die. I’m not talking about a physical death, but I’m talking about a death to life where you let your captivity kill your dreams and work for Christ.

For many years I watched Mrs. Marlene Evans, a very good Christian lady, fight cancer. The doctors told her many times that she was going to die from cancer. They told her that she didn’t have much time to live. Each time they told her this, instead of letting the captor of cancer take her life, she decided to take her captivity and use it to help others. I remember her saying, “I have chosen to live until I die.” Though cancer eventually took her life, it didn’t take away her joy. For many years she told the captor of cancer that she was not going to allow it to stop her from joyfully serving the LORD.

You have a choice to either let your captor cause you to die, or you can surrender to the fact that you are a captive of your trial, and continue to live. Maybe your captor is a disease. You can either let your disease take your life, or you can decide to live until you die. Maybe your captor is divorce, death of a loved one, a family member who has broken your heart, financial pressure or an attack against your character. You can either lie down and die, or surrender to the fact that you can’t change your captivity and live until you die.

Let me remind you that you still have life. Let me remind you that the LORD has a purpose for allowing you to be captivated by your captor. May I remind you that you still have family to love, and a church to attend, and friends around you, and most of all you are still saved. If you will surrender to the fact that you can’t change your captivity, then you can use it to help others.

Whatever captor you face today, I challenge you not to let it take your joy or life. Surrender to the fact that you are a captive, and go live life. Your quality of life may not be what you would like, but you still have a reason to go on and help others. I encourage you to choose to live. Take your joy from within and go help others who are captive. You will find that when God allows you to be a captive, that there are others around you who are also captives whom you can help. If you won’t surrender to your captivity, then you can’t help them. However, if you surrender to it then you can help all those around you who are also a captive of your captivity.

Emergency Prayer Request for Pastor Joe Esposito

Pastor EspositoUPDATE AS OF OCTOBER 7

I received a text yesterday from Bro. Joe Esposito’s son, and I thought his words would best explain his father’s condition. I do personally ask that you continue to pray earnestly for Bro. Esposito and for God’s healing. Please be very specific with the conditions that they ask below. Below is what was texted to me:

Good afternoon. Some have asked if we could keep you posted on my dad’s situation. A slight improvement is that he is now taking more breaths on his own, whereas yesterday it was mostly the machine breathing for him. As of this morning, we are still just waiting and praying. My mom did ask me to send a list of specific prayer requests, so I have listed them below. Thank you again for your texts, emails, calls, and most of all, your continued prayer for my dad. As a family, that is our greatest comfort. Have a blessed day.

PRAYER REQUESTS

  • No long term damage to his brain
  • Fever to go down
  • Swelling/brain pressure to reduce
(normal pressure is 5-10. His is around 20 still.)
  • Bleeding to stop completely
  • Further surgery needed
  • Wisdom for the physicians

UPDATE AS OF OCTOBER 4 at 2 PM

Here is an update on Pastor Joe Esposito given by his son:

Good afternoon. Just wanted to send a short update about my dad. They just finished his second procedure to remove/repair some of the ruptured areas around his brain. They believe they got the critical part removed, but there is still more they need to remove. That all depends upon how his body reacts to today’s procedure. Please continue to pray that his body would react well and we will be able to move forward. Thank you for your prayers, texts, kind words, and love shown to our family. Have a blessed day.

INITIAL PRAYER REQUEST:

Please pray for my friend, Pastor Joe Esposito. Last night he suffered a brain aneurysm. He was in surgery all night, and they said that the first part of the surgery saved his life. However, they had to stop the surgery because of brain swelling. This is a life and death situation. The doctors give him a 33% chance to live. They have scheduled another surgery for 6:30 AM PST. PLEASE PRAY FOR A MIRACLE! This is completely in the hands of God right now. Pray that the doctors will have the wisdom to know what to do, and pray for the family and church during this trying time.
