The Unavoidable Question

the-unavoidable-questionby: Mark Lenentine

Life has many good questions…

Why is the sky blue?

What is the meaning of life?

How can I understand girls? (Don’t bother with this question. It has no right answer!)

Some questions are just annoying – How much longer until we get there?

And some questions are life changing – Will you marry me?

No matter how old or young you are, you have learned by experience that life is made up of questions. This is, in fact, true even with the first man and woman ever created. God created mankind towards the end of Genesis chapter 1, and by chapter 3, we have the first recorded question in the Bible.

Wow, that didn’t take long!

Genesis 3:1, “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Eve comes face-to-face with a question that changed the course of mankind. Although this question is worded many different ways, the question that Eve faced and we face almost on a daily basis is this – IS GOD GOOD?

When you read the story, you will see Satan laying out a plausible story of a “big, mean God” who was somehow trying to keep her from something she really wanted.

Hey, Eve, what is God trying to hide from you?

Do you really think that God has YOUR best in mind?

Eve isn’t the only one. Think about the questions that must have been running through Job’s mind when God allowed Satan to take EVERYTHING he had in just a moment. Probably the same questions David faced when God took his newborn baby. Can you imagine the sickening feeling Gideon had when he and only 300 men, meagerly armed with trumpets and pitchers, walked up to the camp of the most powerful military on Earth?

Is God really good?

Does He really have my best in mind?

Can He really take care of me?

Perhaps you have faced the same question in one form or another. Maybe you too have stumbled into an unfortunate and despairing season of life and pondered this plaguing uncertainty. Whether you have been there before or you are there now, I would encourage you to face this question with a few other questions:

Who is putting this doubt in your heart?

  • Remember, it was the Devil himself who posed this question first in history. God is never the Author of doubt.

Has God ever let you down before?

  • We are often by human nature very distrusting, but give God the benefit of the doubt because He has never failed before!

What good has God done for you in the past?

  • Sometimes the quickest skill we learn as Christians is the incredible ability to so quickly forget God’s blessings of yesterday. The children of Israel were witnesses of a miracle by the hand of God one day and then complainers and doubters the next.

I would encourage you to constantly remember how God has been good to you, for the day will come when God’s goodness will be questioned. In that day, wouldn’t it be great to have the right answer!

Making an Impact in Your Youth

Making-an-Impact-in-Your-Youthby: Jonathan Painter

Whether you know it or not, the youth departments of our independent fundamental Baptist churches are indeed our “secret weapon” in the constant fight against Satan and his world. This is why I believe our youth is Satan’s biggest target in the battle. The teen department is where you’ll find energy and fire. I believe if our youth departments would turn their vision, their passion, their desire, and their energy towards the things of God, our nation would see a revival like it has never seen.

I fear that our teenagers are sitting back and waiting for the older generation to start a revival and then they will follow suit; yet, it is natural for the youth of a society to set the trend for the period. Just as the youth of America ushered in the rock music movement, and hippy fashion movement, I believe our Christian young people hold the key to ushering in a Great Awakening of this nation again. Now believe me, I have not lost my mind, I do not believe we need to hold national conferences and put thirteen year old young men behind the pulpits to preach. No, we will leave the “national pulpit” to more experienced and seasoned men of God. However, I do believe that the thirteen year-old can load his pocket up with tracts and take a New Testament in his hand, and then go out and tell someone about Jesus Christ. I do believe that a thirteen year-old can determine in his heart that he is going to seek the Lord, be holy and pure and establish a walk with God. There is so much a young person can do to stir-up a revival in this nation, if our youth would simply DO IT!

A Walk With God – If the teenagers in our youth departments want to spark a revival in America once again, then it must start with a walk with God. I am afraid we feel that we will only spark a revival if we can have our say in the national spotlight. Who cares about the national spotlight when God has the grace to give us our say before His throne in our prayer closet? The youth of America could spark a revival in their walk with God, not just filling up a devotional book, but literally reading and studying God’s Word to get something out of it. We could spark a revival if our youth would actually spend more than two minutes of prayer a day. We could see a revival!

Righteous Living – I could have written the whole article on this subject alone, but I will only touch on the subject. America needs to see a group of young people who fear God, and live like it! We need young men and ladies who dress right, talk right and walk with an upright heart. America is used to seeing rebellion in her youth, and she only sees swearing, lewdness, and sloppiness in her youth. If she could see a group of young Christian Americans who live life like they love God, then we could see a revival in our cities, and in our states and in our nation!

Soul Winning – It is about time that our independent, fundamental, Baptist youth took the energy that teenagers have bottled inside of them and use it to go out and win souls to Jesus Christ. It is one thing for America to see young people who walk with God, and it’s another to see them live for God. However, when a teenager has enough guts to proclaim his Saviour’s grace, that will leave an impression, and we will see a revival once again!

Entertainment: Satan’s Brainwashing Technique

Entertainment-Satans-Brainwashing-Techniqueby: Jonathan Painter

Death, it truly does happen every day. What is death? Death can mean a number of different things depending in which context it is used. Death can often mean just simply the end of a temporary process, or it could mean the finish of a human beings mortal life on this Earth. Death can also refer to eternal damnation as it does in Revelation 20:14, “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” We cannot ignore the fact that death exists. However, I fear that in our modern age that the reality of death has been cheapened, and the afterlife robbed of its true meaning.

One must understand that life is only lived once, we do not keep coming back to try again, and again until we accomplish our goal. You may laugh and say, “Oh, only Hindu fanatics believe in that stuff.” No, I am afraid not. It is becoming more and more prominent in our video game driven society. We are so used to sitting in front of a screen controlling our heroic character on the PlayStation or the Xbox, and when we die, we simply get to start all over again. This is part of Satan’s ploy to distract us of the impact of death, and cheapen the thought of death in our minds. Don’t forget that you mortally die once. You don’t get to restart your life. Why are teenage suicides so high? They are high because the teenager crumbles under the pressure and feel that taking their own life is like hitting the restart button on the controller. You only live once, and you only mortally die once.

Why has death been so cheapened in our society? Why has Satan set out to cheapen death in our minds? I will tell you exactly why. Satan wants to make us so numb to death that when someone tells us of a Saviour Who died for us, the general thought becomes, “So what? People die all the time.” We become so immune to death that we no longer appreciate the death of the Lord. We have become so familiar with death that it has lessened the impact of the death of Jesus Christ in our minds.

What about life after death? Satan has attacked this as well. We know that after one dies, their soul either goes to Heaven or to Hell; however, our modern entertainment publishers have added a new aspect. It is called, the “living dead” the “zombie apocalypse” or “vampires.” All of these are fictional, but many of the youth in this day and age believe it to be true. I am not making reference to a few eccentric ghost chasers, I am talking about our society as a whole is beginning to accept these fictitious situations as facts of the future, or in some cases, the present. Again Satan wants to attack the fact that there is a Heaven and Hell. He doesn’t want people to think about where they will spend eternity.

You may be asking, “What is the point of this article?” The point is that we need to be very cautious with the entertainment of this world. Satan is using it as a brainwashing tool, and we cannot be subjected to it. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2.

It’s Common Sense

It's-Common-Senseby: Brian Petrick

The correct definition of legalism is, “Trying to earn favor or salvation through good works.” Of course this is biblically impossible (Titus 3:5, Ephesians 3:8-9) because God’s love for us is always the same, and salvation is only by grace through faith and “not of works.” I think we would all agree on this point, that the first definition of legalism is the wrong way to go.

However, the definition of legalism most commonly used today is, “Too many rules, too many lists, too strict, or doing things by constraint that I do not really want to do.”

This is where many people have a problem. The neo-evangelicals or neo-Baptists: (Neo just means new – a new breed – not the way it used to be), they always refer to legalism with this basic definition, and then they say legalism is bad, it’s wrong! They say, “We have freedom in Christ!” This is true, but freedom still has it’s boundaries. Adam and Eve were free, but they still were not allowed to eat of one tree. They disobeyed and lost that freedom, just as every time WE disobey we lose more and more of our freedoms.

The problem with the neo-evangelical or neo-Baptist is that they use this fight against legalism as a cop-out in order to use this “freedom” as a license to sin. We (the saved) are definitely “free in Christ.” Freed from Satan, sin, death and Hell just to name a few, but we were also freed from these things so that we could be freed to some things! Freed to live for Him. Freed to serve Him. Freed to please HIM and freed to serve others. Christ did NOT free us to do whatever we want in violation of the guidelines of what the Bible teaches and then call it freedom. We should call that disobedience and rebellion!

I actually agree with the “Neo’s” when they say, “The rules should not take over the relationship,” and “the external should not supersede the internal.” Another classic is, “When we are governed by lists, then the lists keep getting longer and longer, and it never stops.” I agree with these statements – to a point. Let me explain:

The first statement – “Rules should not take over relationship.” I agree wholeheartedly. Anything we do for the Lord SHOULD be because we love the Lord and not because we feel we have to, and many times we get that wrong because of our old-nature. If we only do for the Lord when we feel like it, and only when our hearts are overflowing with love for Him (as it should always be), then let’s be consistent. I mean let’s not make our children go to school on the days when they don’t absolutely love school. I mean, their relationship in their heart is not right on that day, so why are we legalists, and make them go anyway? Let’s do the same with work. I do not think I should have to go to work on Mondays, because I am not in love with my job or my boss and my relationship and motivation is not right. What about when we make our children clean their room, or take out the garbage even when they don’t feel like it? They are not in love with their room, the garbage, or even sometimes with the parent who told them, but they are made to do it anyway.

Should our kids love the Lord enough to realize they should love school, and love to obey their parents? YES! Hopefully they do. Should we as adults love the Lord enough to be thankful to Him for His provision in providing for us a J-O-B, and out of relationship and love for Him, go to work and work hard (“as to the Lord”), motivated by our love for Him? YES! – and hopefully we do have days like that! But how many times have we gone to work (with the old nature attitude) – I hafta’ go, and I don’t wanna’,..but I will. Probably 80% of the time that’s how we go to work and our children go to school. Now I wish the love and the heart and the right motivation was in it for all of us, BUT EVEN WHEN IT’S NOT, and we still obey – it causes good results. God, in His mercy still blesses that kind of obedience. I can promise you, He does not bless ANY kind of disobedience. What would our lives be like if we only went to school as children on the days we were in love with school? Or, what if we only went to work on those days? Or, only obeyed our boss when we were in love with him (or her)? Not too hard to imagine what our lives would be like – right?

The second statement:

I have even heard some neo-evangelical pastors say, “Legalism is bad, but we should also not use our newfound freedom in Christ as a license to sin.” Of course, I agree with the last part of that statement. But, by saying that legalism (or too many rules) is bad, he is in effect saying, “Do not use this license to sin, but here,…let me give you a license to sin. Go now, and enjoy life and when anyone gives you a Bible-based doctrine or guideline plainly laid out in Scripture that you do not want to adhere to, just cry – LEGALISM!, LEGALISM!” Then you can go ahead with your violation of Scripture without any fear of your conscience (or the Bible) getting in your way.

Let me try to wrap this up. When we were saved, we should have not only received Jesus, but we should have surrendered our will to His will. Because of His great love for us demonstrated on the cross of Calvary, we should be so thankful that He set us free from the bondage of sin that we “should no longer serve sin” but we would search the Scriptures to see what pleases Him, and gladly do whatever it is. It is because we are so thankful, so dedicated, so surrendered to Him that we search the Bible to find out what displeases Him and stay away from those things. Not by constraint, or because we have to!

If you feel you have to serve Jesus, or have to have standards, or have to go soul winning, or have to get the sinful worldly styles, TV shows, videos or other ungodly influences out of your life, then you must have a heart problem. I am not saying you are definitely not saved (although that could very well be the problem), but I am saying you are definitely harboring, protecting and preserving unconfessed sin, and are not fully surrendered to the Lord!

One of my friends recently told me if we were honest in church, sometimes we would have to sing:

“I surrender some,” or “I surrender sometimes,” or “I refuse to surrender at all, and you can’t make me!”

A little boy, was told to go sit in the corner because of his bad behavior in school. He stood in the corner and the teacher said, “I told you to sit in the corner!” With that, the boy sat down. Then he raised his hand and the teacher said, “What is it boy?” He said, “Teacher, I may be sitting on the outside,…but I’m still standing on the inside!”

That’s the rebellion that’s inside all of us at times. Should we serve the Lord with gladness at all times? YES! YES! YES! But, even when we obey when we don’t want to, or our heart is not in it, we’re much better off, than when we don’t.

What if the little boy just kept refusing to sit? I’m sure the punishment would have gotten worse right? Our Father does the same with us, because He loves us enough!

Again, works cannot save us in any way shape or form, nor do they give us more love from God. He loves us unconditionally, this is absolutely true. But, when we clearly defy and disobey Scripture, we cannot file that under “freedom in Christ;” instead, file that under willful disobedience to Almighty God.

While God’s love for us never changes (as shown in the story of the prodigal son), his favor (or blessing) upon our life does, in direct proportion to our obedience or disobedience to his Word. How was the prodigal son’s life, as long as he lived in rebellion? Not too blessed, was it? Notice how the son, before he left said,…“Give me.” But, when he got right he said to the father, “Make me as one of thy hired servants.” Why? Because now he was fully broken and surrendered to do (not talk about doing) his father’s will with a heart full of love and respect.

I surrender all, but admittedly, not always. Even during those times, I should obey. That’s not legalism, that’s just smart. That’s obedience. Someone said obedience is doing what you’re told to even when you don’t want to.

If I commanded you to take a $5 bill from me and go down to Dairy Queen and buy yourself something once every day, that would not be a really good test of most people’s obedience. Especially the younger people. But, if everyday I commanded you take take some money and go to the health-food store, buy vitamins, vegetable juice and a salad, that would probably be a much better test. You may not want to, but if you did, you’d still be blessed with the healthy results over time, while the other person (whom God loves just as much), over time would be suffering with high blood pressure, diabetes, sluggishness and who knows what else.

Everyone wants the blessings,…while disobeying the Blesser! We cannot have the blessings of God, without obedience to Him.

How to Make Everybody Happy

How-to-Make-Everybody-Happyby: Rick Walter

In 1 Samuel 6:20-7:1, we find the story of the Philistines returning the Ark of God to the people of Israel. The men of Beth-shemesh were excited at first, but then because of their disobedience of looking inside of it, the Lord killed over fifty-thousand of them. All of a sudden, they no longer wanted the Ark. They sent out the message that if anybody wanted it to come and get it. It wasn’t long before the people of Kirjath-jearim came and got it.

As I read 1 Samuel 6:20 – 7:1, I couldn’t help but think of soul winning. There seems to be many who do not want the truth of the Gospel, but there is always someone else out there who does.

Just look at the path of the Ark. The Philistines didn’t want it, but the men of Beth-shemesh did. Then, the men of Bethshemesh did not want it, but the people of Kirjath-jearim did. David didn’t want it because Uzzah died, but Obed-edom wanted it. It has always been that way.

As you go soul winning, you will definitely meet those who do not want what you have to offer, but don’t allow that to discourage you. Just down the road there is someone who does want it. That means there are several things to keep in mind.

  1. The sooner we find the one who doesn’t want the Gospel, the sooner you find the one who does.
  2. The more people you talk to, the more people you will find who want what you have to offer.
  3. The more people you find who want what you have to offer, the more people who will trust Christ.
  4. The more who trust Christ means the more people in Heaven one day.
  5. The more people in Heaven means the quicker the rapture takes place.
  6. The sooner the rapture takes place, the sooner we get to leave this world.
  7. The sooner we leave this world, the sooner those who did not want it can get rid of us.
  8. The sooner they can get rid of us, the happier they will be.
  9. By going soul winning we can make everyone happy!

The Power of Making a Right Choice

The-Power-of-Making-a-Right-Choiceby: Brian Petrick

Jeremiah 17:10, “I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”

Proverbs 1:31, “Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.”

(Also Proverbs 31:31, Psalm 128:1-2 and Proverbs 10:16)

Everyday we make a multitude of choices! From what we eat, to what we will wear, to what we choose to say,…or not to say; whether we will share gossip or share the Gospel; whether we will read our Bible and pray this day or not; whether we will have a good attitude today or not; whether we will have a good, positive outlook on life today, or dwell on the negatives. We may be asking ourselves – Who will I date, and possibly marry? Where will I work? Will I go to college, or not? Will I choose to undermine and criticize leadership or be a team player who gets involved, supports, and prays for leaders? Will I choose to please God or please my “friends” who see no problem with violating one (or many) of His principles? The list goes on and on, and even includes things like… “Will I chose the Happy Meal?…Or the Chicken Nuggets?” OK, just a little humor to see if you’re still with me…Obviously some choices are bigger than others! Some decisions have more consequences or more potential rewards than others as well.

EVERY decision affects the direction of our life, and EVERY decision is important! The verses above tell us that basically we are going to “EAT” the fruit of our “doings” or our “own way.” And by the time we are eating that fruit, it does not matter if we like the fruit or not that we have put in front of ourselves. There will come a time when we absolutely must eat it. It’s just like that statement, “You made your bed, now you have to sleep in it.” The Bible is saying: “You’ve planted a certain kind of fruit. You cultivated it, then you harvested it. Now you must eat it. There’s no way around it at this point.” So depending on if you have put good fruit (good choices), or bad fruit (bad choices) in front of you,…”according to our ways” (or choices), we will either get to eat an awesome meal, a horrible meal, or something in between, all because of life’s decisions.

An example would be of a teenager who says, “I can’t wait to get my driver’s license to drive so I’ll just sneak off with some of my friends and drive – I’m sixteen,…I know what I’m doing. But then when he does this one night, he gets into a car accident and one of his best friends is killed. Someone in the other car is paralyzed. There’s no insurance on the car. Now he has to “eat” the fruit of this one bad decision. He has to eat remorse, regret, depression, court, jail time, embarrassment, huge financial burdens with no hope of getting a good job due to no driver’s license for many years. On the other hand, if he had just waited to drive (even if it’s until age 18-20) and followed wise counsel from his parents, he could have avoided all the negatives and ended up eating all the delicious fruit of his good decisions instead, all the while keeping his good reputation intact. He could get a good job at an early age and get a jump-start on life with no unnecessary emotional regrets and financial baggage!

So, how can we know that we are making a right choice?

For starters we need to make sure we are making a biblical choice; one that does not directly violate Scripture. For example, I really don’t think there is any need to pray about taking a job as a beer truck driver or a bartender based on 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 and Proverbs 23:31.

We also need to bathe our decisions in prayer! We hear Proverbs 3:5-6 quoted over and over at graduations, and I’m not saying I’m tired of hearing that whatsoever! It is totally appropriate, and I hope that tradition never stops! It says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;  and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” But, do we really acknowledge Him in all our ways? Let’s be honest about how many multiple decisions we make each day and never stop to pray and ask God for any guidance whatsoever. Again, we do not need to pray about the decisions that would be obvious violations of Scriptures, and we may not need to pray about the choice of chicken nuggets versus the Happy Meal! (although it couldn’t hurt – Ha!) But, we should definitely be “acknowledging Him” a lot more often than we do. Pray before any big decisions. Ask God to show you in His Word or bring it to your mind if there are any violations of Scripture. Then, pray in a secluded place where there are little or no distractions. I personally like to take walks with God on a quiet street or along Lake Michigan where I live. Pastor Jeff Fugate once gave me this advice. He said, “Don’t be afraid to do what God has given you peace about during your prayer time, alone with Him.” In other words, you may have some fear when you go to actually do what God has put on your heart, but if he gave you peace about it during your prayer time, go ahead with it in spite of your fears. On the other hand, if you have a real uneasiness in your heart during your prayer time, DO NOT go forward, but continue to wait on the Lord and seek His will.

Also, regarding decision making, I know you’ve probably already heard this dozens of times, but it’s some of the best advice on Earth based on Proverbs 11:14 and Proverbs 24:6 (“in a multitude of counselors there is safety”). Get counsel from saved people who are on fire for God! This should include your pastor and your parents. Listen intently to what they have to offer! If their advice lines up with Scripture and you have peace in your heart during your prayer and Bible time with God, then I believe it’s like a three-legged stool that can hold the weight. #1. Scriptural #2. Godly counsel #3. Peace with God in prayer. If anyone gives advice that is against Scripture you do not have to follow it, but if your parents are saved and on fire for God and your pastor is as well, then this is extremely unlikely to happen. I urge you to stay in that “safety net” of a multitude of counselors! I have seen so many young people destroyed simply because they never asked for counsel, or they didn’t listen to the counsel that they were given.

In closing, I preached a message once based on Proverbs 1:31 entitled “You Will Eat Your Fruit!” In that message, I illustrated how each one of us someday will have no choice whatsoever, but to “EAT” from the decisions that we are making right now. If you want to “eat good” as they say, then please heed the advice in this article! If you want to “eat nasty fruit or garbage,” then you will disregard what I have written. I did not come up with any of this on my own. It was taught to me by my “multitude of counselors.” I am 44 now, but much of what I have given you here I learned as a teenager. By God’s grace I have a wonderful wife who absolutely loves the Lord (and me too! Woo Hoo!) I have a happy family with 3 beautiful children who also know and love the Lord. I am so very, very blessed and have very few regrets! Your parents, your preacher and I want this same life for you!

The “SUPER-BLESSED” life!

Below you will also find more guidelines for making decisions. I found them in an old notebook that I took notes in as a teenager. I do not know who the originator was, but I hope this helps you as well: When Making Decisions:

1. Is it biblical?

2. Does it honor the Lord?

3. Would Jesus choose it?

4. Is it a stumbling block or a stepping stone? (to others)

5. Is it doubtful? (When in doubt – don’t do it)

6. Is it right or is it wrong?

7. Will it help my growth or hinder it?

Gun to Bible

Gun-to-Bibleby: Rex Fahr

It was November 20, 2003, a Thursday night, I had a lot of things going on in my life both at work and in my marriage. I won’t explain them in this article, but they had me at a turning point. I went to Alto-Reste Park cemetery and sat down on my dad’s grave. Beside me was a .357 pistol, and I didn’t have it there for protection. I sat and talked to my dad and God that night, and I asked them to give me some sort of sign on what to do. I sat there for hours talking and crying trying to figure out what to do. I didn’t find out until later that my dad was saved when we found papers confirming that he and my mother had both trusted Christ earlier in their lives. All I know for sure is that I put the pistol back in the truck and went home that night.

The next day I got up and went to work as usual, not knowing what was about to take place. I went in at 5AM and a co-worker, Chip Jones, a meat manager, came in at 6AM. We were talking when he asked me what I was doing that night. Thinking he might want me to go hunting or something like that, I answered, “Nothing.” He then asked me to go to church. What was I supposed to say? I had already told him I wasn’t doing anything. So, I said I would try and come. God was in this whole conversation for I ended up going to church on a Friday night, November 21, 2003.

I walked in to the Heritage Baptist Church and found out I knew a few more people there. I sat with Chip and his family, and listened to Brother Domelle preach that night. He was an evangelist, and a hard, loud preacher who told it like it was! I was leaving that night when a friend, Darrell Snare, asked me some questions, and I told him my faith was jilted at the time and I didn’t know what or how I felt about God. He asked me to stay and talk to Pastor Mark Biter. That night I got saved! I didn’t know how to explain it, BUT something happened that night. I know now it was the Holy Spirit coming to dwell inside of me.

My salvation has ended up touching so many people. Where do I begin? My kids were the first to notice a difference in me. They asked their mother why dad was going to church on a Sunday night or a Wednesday night. I gave up cussing and telling bad jokes. I tried to read the Bible, but struggled in the translation of some of the Scriptures. My wife started to go to church with me and found out what she was missing in the Catholic faith she practiced. She also got saved on the day after Christmas one year later. My son, Rex, got saved and started to attend our church. His story is one by itself. Let me just say he ended up marrying the pastor’s daughter, and we now have at least one granddaughter.

I went to church faithfully, but when asked to go soul winning, my mind and Satan kept me from going. I was brought up by my dad to never accept failure or rejection. The thought of knocking on a door and having it slammed in my face was more than I could stand. But, every week when the pastor would bring it up during the service, it bothered me. I went to the altar every service for months asking God to help me become a soul winner. I also went to the alter for 6 months praying that my son would marry the preacher’s daughter. Finally the Holy Spirit said, Try it, I’ll take care of you.”

How did I get past the feeling of rejection? First of all, I realized it wasn’t me who people were rejecting, it was Jesus. The door was being slammed on Him, not me. The first four months I went with the pastor, and even though we were rejected by many, nobody slammed the door on our face. I was very nervous with the first person I helped to find salvation, but it was like no other feeling. I have won championships, been voted MVP, won sportsmanship awards, top bowler, best average, hit home runs and pitched no hitters, and the list goes on, BUT nothing compares to the feeling you get when you win someone to Christ. And if you think that’s great, try the feeling you get when you lead a family member to the LORD! Most of my family has seen that it’s not a religion that is important, but what is important is that you accept Christ as your Saviour.

In the summer of 2007, I was asked to teach at Bible school. That year at Bible school, my oldest grandson got saved. The next year I was asked to be an usher and help with security at church. Now I teach a Sunday School class of young boys and hope l can make a difference in their lives. I still go soul winning every Tuesday night, and so far have helped over 50 people find the Lord. I do not intend to stop until I can’t do it any more. I’m not patting myself on the back, I’ve just realized there are so many people in this world who need to know the truth about eternal life and how to receive it!

My only regret is that I didn’t do this earlier in my life. I thank God for allowing me to live long enough to get saved so that I can serve Him as much as I can in my declining years. God truly took the gun from my hand and put a Bible in it. Praise the LORD!

I Love Sweet Tea

I-Love-Sweet-Teaby: Brandon Fowler

I LOVE SWEET TEA! I don’t mean like, I mean LOVE. I wouldn’t call it an addiction, but let’s just say I’d prefer drinking it over most anything else. I know what you’re thinking, “You’re from the north, what could you possibly know about sweet tea?” Yes, most of my life I have resided in the north; however, I do know what I like and dislike.

To this day, my mother is an avid tea drinker. Growing up, there was always a pitcher in the refrigerator, and I’m sure there is right now as well. Don’t be tricked though, she doesn’t make sweet tea. She brews it, then once it’s in her cup she adds artificial sweetener. YUCK!

Unsweetened tea is no good if you ask me, and the only thing that’s worse is artificially sweetened tea. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way many times, in both my parent’s kitchen, and in my walk with God.

You see, growing up in a Christian home, I was very familiar with the things of God. I attended church regularly, graduated from a Christian school, and even went off to a good Bible college. There came a day around my eighteenth birthday, when I decided I’d had enough. I was tired of the life I had, and although it directly contradicted everything I knew in God’s Word, it was a choice I still wanted to make.

Six years later, my life had spiraled out of control, leaving me feeling further from God than I ever knew was possible. I claimed to be an atheist and Satanist, and my lifestyle reflected the rock and roll icons that I had made my new gods. It was in that place where God allowed my eyes to be opened to the truth. I was living life on my terms, doing everything I wanted, and completely empty on the inside.

My search for contentment and joy, led me from one dead end to another, over and over again. All of that changed the day that I met Christ.I saw the peace my family and friends had, that I knew I didn’t. I realized that maybe what I was missing, was what I’d been raised on all along!

I told God I was giving Him a chance, and my life has never been the same. I started reading and praying, as I sincerely tried the best I could to walk with God and apply my heart to His Word. I thought of all of the times I cursed God, ignored Him, and blatantly disobeyed Him; yet, through it all, He loved me, He blessed me, and continued to wait.

Now that I am serving the Lord with my life, it’s easy for me to see where I, and so many others go wrong. We all have the same rebellious sin nature inside of us, and we all want to have fun. Satan is an expert at showing us the things of this world in a pretty nice looking package. What we don’t realize until it is too late, is that NOTHING Satan has to offer is real! It’s always flavored with some cheap imitation, that will leave you feeling empty, broken, and with a terrible taste in your mouth!

Jesus is the answer! The longing in your soul, the thing you just can’t put your finger on that’s missing from your life is Christ! He is the real thing, and everything worth while He gives. Psalm 34:8 tells us to “taste and see that The Lord is good!” Who knew this better than David? He too, tasted the things of God, then like so many of us do, thought he’d give Satan’s tea a try. When it was all said and done, he realized how foolish he’d been and ran back to God.

Whether you’re a young person or adult, walking with God or in the hog pen; please remember this, GOD LOVES YOU. He forgave David for his mistakes, He forgave me, and He’ll forgive you. You may very well have a mouthful of disgusting, artificially sweetened tea brewed by none other than Satan himself right now, but GOD STILL LOVES YOU! Run back to Him. Give Him another shot, and give Him your all…you’ll not regret it!

Reap Your Harvest

Reap-Your-HarvestREAP YOUR HARVEST
by: Kelly Daniel

1 Samuel 6:1-9

After the Philistines captured the Ark of God, they took it to Ashdod and Gath as a trophy piece that they had defeated the God of Israel. Every place the Philistines took the ark bad things happened to the people. Finally, they decided to send it back to Israel to avoid God’s wrath on their land.

When they decided to send the ark back to Israel, they put it on a cart that was pulled by two milk cows. They said, “If it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us .” (1 Samuel 6:9) Where do you think these two milk cows, which had probably NEVER PULLED ANYTHING BEFORE in their lives, went? They went straight to Bethshemesh, a city of Israel, thus assuring the Philistines that what was happening to them was indeed from the God of Israel. Imagine the FEAR OF GOD that gripped the hearts of the Philistines! If there was ever a time when the Philistines were ripe to hear of God’s saving grace, it was then.

So, why were the Israelites more excited about getting back their “RELIC” than in seeing what God was doing? Does God take pleasure in destroying people? According to Ezekiel 18:23 He does not. Why then, didn’t Israel send any MISSIONARIES into the Philistine’s land and take advantage of the work that God had begun to do in their hearts? Why didn’t Israel try to WIN THEM TO THE MESSIAH? They didn’t try because Israel was spiritually asleep and could not see ANY LOST SOULS past the end of their nose.

That generation of Israelites will be dealt with very severely by God in the judgment for not reaping that harvest of Philistine souls that God had prepared to be reaped. Shame on them!

BUT WAIT…WHAT ABOUT YOU MY FRIEND? Acts 20:23 says that the Holy Spirit witnesses in EVERY CITY!!! In your area, you are responsible for the harvest of souls that the Holy Spirit has already prepared. Just like God had prepared the Philistines, He has prepared people in your city to be reached. It is a shame that the saved spend their lives doing everything but harvesting the souls that are ready to harvest. You will not enjoy reaping rewards at God’s judgment. I challenge you to get out and harvest the souls in your field who WANT TO BE SAVED! I wonder if Goliath would have been reached if the Israelites would have reached the harvest while it was ripe? There is a Goliath in your future that you could avoid if you will simply reap the harvest that God has prepared for you.

A Different Life

A-Different-LifeA DIFFERENT LIFE
by: James Shepherd

God created you to be different and He has a unique plan for your life. As a young person you might feel that to fulfill God’s plan for your life you will have to be different from almost everyone around you, and you’re right. If you want to have a good marriage, you will have to think, act, behave and believe differently from many around you, because more than half of those around you will get divorced and many more will be trapped in terrible relationships.

If you want to find a fulfilling purpose in your life that makes you get up every day excited about the possibilities, you will have to be different than your classmates who may be headed towards a dead-end job or a career that will drive their relationships towards destruction rather than adding to a life filled with faith, purpose and happiness.

If you want to have a strong, personal relationship with God, you will have to be very different from those who only seem to be close to God on Sunday. If you want to have a strong spirit that can make it when life gets tough, your faith must be stronger than your friends who can’t make it through a high school break up without having an emotional breakdown. Don’t let the Devil trick you by using society and your peers as the only “normal” life you can have. Most young people say they want to have an above average, “different” sort of life, but they don’t seem to want to think or act in a different sort of way.

So, what kind of life do you want right now? What kind of life do you want 10 or 20 years from now? Do you want an average life or a “different” life? If you want a different life, you need to start building it right now! 1 Timothy 4:12 says “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” It sounds like God plans for you to be different right now!

So, what is keeping you from living a different life? Most Christian teenagers are in a “just do it” mindset when they should start with a “just be it” mindset. They think, “I don’t ever want to go to church, but I guess I will just do it.” They tell their friends, “I don’t want to read my Bible, but my parents make me, so I guess I will just do it.” If you want to live a different kind of life, the life that God has planned, start by changing your mindset from “I will do it” to “I will be it.” The people who are making you do things now will not be making you do them when you are out of the house, so start right now developing the mindset that says, “I will be it.”

Rather than saying, “I guess I have to go to church” say, “I will be a church-going Christian who is seeking God’s will for my life.” Instead of “I have to read my Bible for Bible class” say, “I will be a person who wants to know what truth God has for me in the Bible.”  Don’t think, “I have to obey my parents otherwise I will be grounded.” Instead, think, “God wants me to obey my parents, so I am going to do my best to please Him in my relationship with mom and dad.”  God said in 1 Samuel, “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” God cares about your heart; He cares about who you really are on the inside.

Walk worthy of God’s calling on your life. Romans 13:13 says, “Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.” Some Christians will tell you that God cares so much more about your heart that you can act any way you want. That idea doesn’t come from the Bible, and it doesn’t make any sense. 1 Thessalonians 2:12 says, “That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.” If you are reading your Bible every day at home, but you are not living it at school, God is not pleased. Sincerity doesn’t excuse behavior according to the Bible. One of my least favorite sayings is, “That’s just me, that’s just who I am.” My response to this saying is, “Change who you are and become the person God wants you to be!”

Understand that God is ready to help you as you live a life dedicated in His service. Not only do I serve God as a youth pastor on the weekends, He has called me to run a business for Him during the week. One of my habits throughout the day as I conduct business is to pray before every phone call I make. I know God wants me to run my business very differently from other businessmen, and I must have God’s help if I am going to accomplish His will for each phone call I make. Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Get God involved in your day and ask Him for help. If you plan to go against the flow and live a different sort of life with God’s blessings and guidance, you cannot do it without His power and presence. Take some time throughout your day to tell God, “I want to be different, help me to do exactly what You want me to do today.”
