Genesis 2:24
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
One of the greatest relationships a person can have in life is being married to the love of their life. There is nothing better than being married to the person you love and to get to share the rest of your life with them. It is truly one of the enjoyments of life that God gives us.
My grandparents were married for seventy-two years before my grandmother passed away. It was my joy to be able to see them together and to see how they were truly one flesh. They epitomized the verse above. I cannot remember a time in my lifetime when they were apart. I cannot think of one without having the image of both of them together.
Though marriage is an enjoyable relationship, it can also be a nightmare if you are not one flesh. God shows us that the only way you will enjoy the marriage relationship is by becoming one flesh. Becoming one flesh is more than standing at the altar and saying your vows, it is a decision that each spouse must make if they are going to become one flesh.
When God says we are to be one flesh, he is comparing it to the makeup of the body. The body is made up of body, soul and spirit. You must be one in all of these if you are going to become one flesh. If you do not become one in one of these areas, then you will not become one flesh and will not enjoy the marriage relationship as you should.
To be one in body is to have the same goals of life. You will never become one flesh when husband and wife both have different goals as to what they want to accomplish. Having the same goals means you are both going to have to be going the same direction. I believe this is why it is important for the husband and wife to be involved in the same ministry. When you are both working together in the same ministry, then you both have the same goals in life. You both want that ministry to succeed. Sadly, many husbands and wives are not working together and that is why they don’t have the same goals. If you want to be one flesh, then both husband and wife are going to have to become involved in the same activities so that you both have the same goals.
Second, to be one in soul is to have the same values. Your soul is who you are. You acquire the same values by reading the same Book: the Bible. We acquire our values through the Scriptures. This is why it’s important for both of you to have a personal time in the Scriptures so the Word of God can change you. Then, to acquire the same values it would be good for you to have daily devotions together. Talk about what you see in the Scriptures and let it help you develop one flesh.
Third, to be one in spirit only comes through praying together. There is nothing like having your prayers answered together. This puts you in the same spirit. Prayer knits the hearts together so that you create a kindred spirit for your needs. Let me challenge you to be a couple who pray together. There is a saying that I believe to be true that says, “The family that prays together, stays together.” When everyone starts praying for the same thing, it creates a kindred spirit in the home.
Friend, becoming one flesh will only happen through serving the LORD. The LORD has a way of merging different personalities and backgrounds to make them one flesh. You will never enjoy your marriage to its fullest until you become one flesh. Don’t let your marriage be one that is divided, but daily ask God to help you become one flesh that thinks alike and has the same goals that you want to accomplish. This will only happen when you place God in all areas of your life.
