Philippians 4:19
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Punctuality is one of those things that determines someone’s dependability. If a person cannot be on time for their appointments, then they cannot be depended upon in the time of need. Employers will not promote someone who is not dependable to be on time and in their place at a time of need. Trust in any person is only built by the punctuality of that person being where they are supposed to be. Fortunately for the Christian, we have a God Who can be depended upon because He is always on time when we need Him.
The verse above says, “But my God shall supply…” It doesn’t say that another God can supply your need, but your God can supply your need. It doesn’t say that the bank can supply your need, but that God can supply your need. “Shall” is a future tense word. In other words, God knows what your need is before you do, and when the time comes that your need must be satisfied, God will supply it. He doesn’t promise to supply it before that time of need, but in the time of need.
Moreover, something is not a need until you can’t live without it. For instance, my bills are not a need until they are due. When they are due, then it becomes a need. Grace is not needed until I’m at the moment that only God’s grace can get me through. God is promising in this verse that when something becomes a need, something you must have at that moment, then He will be sure to supply it.
The greatest part of this verse is that “God shall supply all your need…” What need is God talking about? You will find in this chapter there are four needs to which God is referring. First, He promises to supply the need of answered prayer. Whatever the prayer is that you need answered, you can rest assured that God shall supply that need when it is time. Oftentimes we pray for God to supply our future needs, but it is not a need until we can’t live without it; however, you can depend upon God answering that prayer when the time of need arises.
Second, God promises to supply the need of peace. In a world of turmoil, you can be assured that God can give you peace. God will supply the peace you need during trials if you will depend upon Him. God will supply the peace you need in times of uncertainty. When others are living in chaos, you can live in the peace of God that He supplies to every Christian.
Third, God promises to supply your need of strength. Verse 13 shows us that God gives us the strength to accomplish the tasks we face. You may not have enough strength, but God will supply the strength you need to finish what you have started. If God has told you to do something, then you can be assured that He will supply the strength you need for that task.
Fourth, God promises to supply your financial need. In the preceding verses, Paul talks about the church meeting His financial needs. He then promises them that just like God used them to supply his need, He will also supply their financial need. Whatever financial need you face today, you can be assured that God can supply it.
Finally, God predicates all of this on the fact that He will supply your needs with His riches. Friend, you have a limitless bank account with God. God is never wanting in the areas of answered prayer, peace, strength and finances. His resources in each of these areas are limitless. Whatever your need is today, you can rest assured that God will supply it in the time of need.
