2 Kings 19:37
“And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.”
It must have seemed like an eternity. Hezekiah had received a message from the king of Assyria that he would invade the land of Judah. Hezekiah did not falter in his trust in God. He told the people not to respond to the threats, and commanded them to call on God. The report of what the servants of the king of Assyria had said about other nations not being able to withstand them were true. Yet, Hezekiah knew that he served the Almighty and true God. He knew that he had done right in commanding the people not to listen to these words. Yet, he still faced this trial.
God responded to Hezekiah’s prayer to save them by telling him that the king of Assyria would not be able to come into his city and that he would eventually be killed. Though God had given His promise to Hezekiah, that didn’t help the people to see what he was saying was true. It must have seemed like an eternity before the verse above finally came to pass and the king of Assyria was killed by his own sons.
You probably are not facing an invasion of a country, but maybe you are facing an invasion of trials. Your life has been turned upside down because of health or financial troubles and you know God’s promises are true, but waiting on God to do His work is not always easy. It’s not always easy to wait on God when your health or the health of a loved one seems to get worse. It’s not easy to wait on God when the bills are almost due and you have no money to pay them. It’s not easy to wait on God when you are daily facing the bombardment of your trial. Your trial has sent you messengers to cause you to fear, but you patiently wait on God to come through.
As you wait on the LORD, let me remind you of Psalm 123:2 which says, “Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.” Notice, the psalmist said that while he waited on God he kept his eyes on Him. That is the secret to waiting on God. You must not keep your eyes on the hardship that you are enduring, for it will cause you to despair. While you wait on God you must keep your eyes on Him.
Why must you keep your eyes on Him? Because God is not shaken by your trials, and He already knows what He is going to do to deliver you. When you keep your eyes on God, you are receiving a steadiness from Him that everything is going to be just fine. What kept Hezekiah doing right was the fact that he kept his eyes on God when the voices of his troubles were calling for him to surrender.
Friend, you must not let the voices of your troubles force you into surrender. God is still on His throne and He will honor His Word. He will honor His Word that He will not leave you. He will honor Romans 8:28 which promises that good will come from your troubles. God has never recanted on one of His promises.
I know that waiting on God can be hard, but you must not give up. God will come through for you if you will keep going. If you will continue to wait on God, you will find that your waiting on Him will be justified when He comes through. Always remember that God is rarely early, He is never late, but He is always on time. Keep waiting on God and you will see your deliverance.
